How does nature become a farmer's helper?
Every insect, bird, flower and earthworm has an important role. Pollinators grow our food, natural predators control pests, and forests and wetlands support healthy farms. This theme investigates how biodiversity creates stronger, healthier and more productive agricultural landscapes through natural ecological processes.
Research Ideas
🐝 Pollinator Surveys: for example; children can observe and record pollinators visiting flowers in your branch/area. If the children in the teams are from different regions/ branches they may compare pollinator diversity, abundance and activity with teams from different habitats, seasons or climatic regions.
🌼 Wildflower Corridors: for example; children may investigate how flowering plants attract pollinators and beneficial insects. They can also compare which native plant species are most effective in supporting biodiversity in different regions.
🦋 Beneficial Insects vs Pests : for example; children work in teams and identify insects found on crops and classify them as pollinators, predators or pests. Compare insect communities across locations to understand how biodiversity naturally regulates pests.
🌳 Habitat Mapping: for example; children may create a map showing trees, hedgerows, water bodies and green spaces around your study area. Optionally they may compare habitat connections with other teams to explore how landscapes influence wildlife movement.
